The sunflowers are committed to reaching for the sun everyday. That's how they got that big. The soil was fertile soil, too. It's like my recovery. My roots have to be surrounded by my 12-step friends. I need to sit in that garden that I could call AA and listen to the people that share all around me. They are like the wind on my face. They soothe me and refresh me. Because I can't be refreshed alone. Nor can these sunflowers grow alone. They need me to bring them water and refill their garden with fresh mulch every year; they need a community to pull their weeds. None of us is in this alone; it's only our disease whispering to us. That whisper gets fainter and fainter the longer I stay in my garden of recovery.
